The Life and Art of Justin O'Brien

Justin O'Brien enters the world on 2 August 1917 in Hurstville, Sydney. He is the third of five children born to Maurice Joseph and Teresa Mary O'Brien. In the household of his parents, the air is thick with an early interest in music, theatre, and the arts. These influences take root before he even picks up a brush, shaping a sensibility that will later define his dual legacy as both a painter and a teacher.

His life moves from the suburbs of Sydney toward a complex intersection of religious imagery and personal experience. While his upbringing was rooted in a devout Irish-Catholic family, his later work would navigate a different spiritual landscape. He eventually finds himself in Rome, where he dies of bone cancer on 25 January 1996.

      Early Life and Military Service

The impulse to create arrives early. At six years old, a gift of chalks, pencils, and instructional books on drawing from an aunt transforms a childhood interest into a definitive direction. By 1940, the trajectory shifts from the studio to the battlefield. On 31 May, O'Brien enlists in the Australian Imperial Force, serving as a nursing orderly. The war moves him through Palestine before a transfer to Ekali, Greece, in April 1941. As Axis forces occupy Greece, the medical orderly becomes a prisoner of war.

The confinement deepens. In January 1942, he is transported to Stalag XX-A, a German-occupied camp in Poland. Even within the confines of the camp, the impulse to create persists. He joins the camp's theatre group and facilitates art classes for fellow prisoners, utilizing whatever supplies are sent by voluntary aid organisations. Amidst the trauma of captivity, the act of drawing remains a constant, even as the scale of his experience shifts from the personal to the survivalist.

      Artistic Career and Major Awards

The post-war years find O'Brien transitioning from the trauma of service to the structured life of an educator. He takes up a position as an art teacher at the Cranbrook School in Bellevue Hill. While teaching, his practice expands into two distinct directions: the intimate study of portraiture and the grander scale of religious art. He moves through the landscape of Europe and Australia, leaving behind significant works within various churches.

Recognition follows his technical evolution. In 1951, he wins the inaugural Blake Prize. A decade later, in 1962, he is awarded the Darcy Morris Memorial Prize. These accolades mark a career defined by a specific tension between the secular and the sacred. Even as he identifies as agnostic, his hands continue to execute complex religious compositions across different continents.

His contributions to the Australian arts community eventually reach the highest levels of national recognition. In 1992, during the Queen's Birthday Honours, he is made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his service to art. This honor cements a legacy built on both the classroom and the studio.

      Notable Works and Subjects

The canvas captures a shift from the literal to the spiritual. In 1941, O'Brien produces a Self-portrait in oil on canvas, a work of realism held by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. This period of direct representation gives way to more complex compositions. By 1945, the subject matter moves toward the biblical with Flight into Egypt, an oil on canvas on hardboard. The imagery leans heavily into religious themes, seen in works like The Virgin Enthroned, even as his personal convictions moved toward agnosticism.

Color and texture define his later explorations. Women in Room with Bird (1948-1949) utilizes oil on canvas to navigate domestic or symbolic spaces. The use of precious materials becomes more pronounced in his later years. In 1969, The Kiss of Judas emerges as an oil and gold leaf on paper on composition board. The gold leaf adds a physical, sacred dimension to the depiction of the betrayal.

Where to See the Works Today

His presence remains anchored in the major institutional collections across Australia. The National Gallery of Australia maintains his works, alongside the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Victoria. In the west and south, his paintings are held by the Art Gallery of Western Australia and the Art Gallery of South Australia. These collections preserve the visual record of his career, from his early realism to his later religious subjects.

Academic institutions also safeguard his output. The University of Sydney and the University of Southern Queensland both hold works by the artist. Beyond his own paintings, the National Portrait Gallery in Australia maintains a number of portraits of O'Brien. These pieces offer a different perspective, capturing the man behind the canvas.
