A life shaped by stone and clay

Born in Svendborg, Denmark, Kai Nielsen began his path with the hands of an apprentice painter at fifteen. His early days were spent learning the weight of materials under Edvard Eriksen at a technical school, where he studied moulding. By 1901, he had moved to Copenhagen to prepare for the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. While the academy initially turned away his drawings, they accepted him into the Sculpture School after seeing a portrait bust he had completed in Svendborg. This early connection to the physical properties of stone and clay would define his entire career.

His time at the Academy brought him close to the works of Auguste Rodin and Constantin Meunier. He spent hours exploring the collections at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, finding inspiration in how figures emerged from their medium. His marriage to the Norwegian painter Yanna Lange Kielland Holm further linked his life to the broader Scandinavian art community.

      The weight of everyday life

Nielsen’s work often looked toward the common person and the simple movements of daily existence. He sought a form of naturalism that avoided abstract pretension, focusing instead on what he called the everyday. This approach is visible in his smaller, more playful pieces, such as Girl Fiddling with Her Toes from 1910 or Two Young Bourgeois Women Exercising in the Morning from 1920. He had a way of capturing chubby toddlers and workers—tailors, coopers, and bakers—in his granite sculptures for Blågårds Plads. These twenty-two figures were integrated into a low wall in Copenhagen, designed to be sat upon and climbed by the children of the neighborhood.

Even when his subjects drew from mythology, they retained a grounded, fleshy quality. His Venus with the Apple and Leda and the Swan use rounded female forms that feel substantial rather than ethereal. He often balanced the subject with the material itself, as seen in The Marble Girl of 1908, where the stone block remains a visible part of the figure's presence.

      Materials and lasting marks

His hands worked through a variety of textures, from the softness of plaster models to the hardness of granite, limestone, and sandstone. Some of his most recognized works were born from bronze and marble, intended for both public squares and private collections. His reach extended into Norway through commissions like Mother and Child, a black granite group now located in Frogner Park, Oslo.

The breadth of his output included:

      • Portrait busts of colleagues and figures like Thorvald Bindesbøll
      • Public works such as the Ymir Well in Faaborg
      • Small statuettes produced for Bing & Grondahl and H.A. Kähler
      • Large-scale bronze and stone figures like The Water Mother

Nielsen passed away in Copenhagen in 1924 at the age of forty-one, leaving behind a body of work that remains embedded in the streets and museums of Denmark and Norway.
