      The Weight of the Brush

Kamil Kozub was born in Stará Ľubovňa on October 14, 1980. His path as a painter took him through the studios of the Technical University in Košice, where he studied under the guidance of Adam Szentpetáry, and later to the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. It was in the studio of Ján Berger that his formal training deepened, shaping a way of seeing that favors the immediate and the felt. He eventually settled into a life of making art in Kežmarok and Podolinec, where the quiet rhythms of the landscape seem to settle into his work.

His paintings carry a certain urgency. There is a tension in the way he approaches a subject, whether it is a landscape, an animal, or a human figure. He does not look at the world from a distance; he looks at it with a sensitivity that feels almost intrusive. The brushwork is expressive, often leaning into a dramatic intensity that forces a viewer to stop and consider the weight of the image. His work has found its way into both private and state collections, moving through various galleries across Slovakia.

A Record of Form and Presence

The development of his practice can be traced through the specific subjects he chose to confront on canvas. His work often moves between the stillness of a scene and a more restless, expressive energy. Some of the notable pieces and milestones in his career include:

      • The 2008 work titled Akvabely, held in the Kysuce Gallery, Osnicna.
      • The 2014 work titled Mecca, held in the Gallery of Spis Artists, Spišská Nová Ves.
      • The 2006 Rector's Award for his diploma work at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava.
      • Participation in the Start Point 2006 international exhibition, which featured the top graduates from European art schools.

      The Quiet Discipline of Teaching

Beyond the canvas, Kozub’s life has been shaped by the act of instruction. He spent time as a teacher at the Secondary School of Art in Kežmarok, sharing the technical and expressive demands of painting with a new generation. This role as an educator sits alongside his own continuous production of art. His exhibitions have spanned many locations, from the galleries in Bratislava and Košice to smaller spaces in Rimavská Sobota and Michalovce. He remains a presence in the Slovak art scene, working from the quiet corners of Kežmarok and Podolinec.
