The Botanical Resistance of Lois Weinberger
Lois Weinberger was an Austrian artist, visual artist, land artist, photographer, painter, and installation artist. His work focused on the relationship between nature and civilization, often centering on the concept of "ruderal" plants. He viewed weeds and spontaneous vegetation as metaphors for the unwanted or the dissident, advocating for the protection of these plants against the ordered and manicured landscapes of human cultivation.
His practice involved a variety of mediums, including notes, drawings, photographs, objects, texts, films, and works in public spaces. Notable projects included the WILD CUBE, a steel enclosure designed to allow spontaneous vegetation to grow, and the RUDERAL SOCIETY, which addressed gaps in urban spaces. In 1993, he created BRENNEN und GEHEN, an 8 × 8 meter area where he opened the asphalt to allow nature to reclaim the space.
