A Shadowy Figure in the Canadas

Martin Somerville arrived in the Canadas from England, a man of many disciplines whose presence in the mid-nineteenth century left a distinct, if somewhat elusive, mark on the burgeoning art scene of Montreal. Born in 1796, he was a figure of professional versatility, moving between the roles of painter, illustrator, and drawing teacher. By 1839, he was already active in the region, establishing himself through a variety of mediums that ranged from delicate miniatures and watercolours to more substantial oil works. His life was one of constant movement and instruction, a professional existence defined by the quiet labor of the studio and the classroom.

His professional life was anchored in the urban centers of Montreal and Quebec. Between 1845 and 1855, he maintained a studio at 25 Rue Saint-Jacques in Montreal, a space that placed him at the heart of the city's creative community. He was a man of formal education and structured learning, advertising himself in the Montreal Gazette as a "Professor of Painting." His pedagogical reach extended to the private sphere, where he taught free-hand and perspective drawing at Miss Plimsoll’s school for young ladies. He was a man who understood the mechanics of sight, teaching his students to master the geometry of perspective and the fluidity of the hand.

The Subject Matter of a Changing Land

The works that define Somerville’s output often focused on the specific social and natural realities of his adopted home. He possessed a particular interest in the people and landscapes of the region, often capturing scenes that reflected the daily rhythms of life in the Canadas. His compositions frequently featured:

      • Indigenous men depicted on snow-shoes.
      • Young women engaged in the sale of moccasins.
      • Gentlemen driving horses and tandem sleighs across the frozen St. Lawrence River.
      • Historical subjects and floral studies.

There is a specific technical quality to his hand that distinguishes his work from his contemporaries. While his paintings often shared thematic ground with other artists of the era, Somerville’s style leaned toward a particular linear draftsmanship. He favored low-keyed colour harmonies, a choice that lent his scenes a certain sobriety. This precision in line and restraint in palette often led to confusion in later years, as some of his canvases were occasionally misattributed to others due to their close thematic relationship to the popular works of the period.

      The Final Years in Quebec

As the 1850s progressed, Somerville’s presence in Montreal faded, and he moved toward Quebec, where he was recorded as a resident during the years 1854–55. He was a member of the Montreal Society of Artists, having exhibited with them in January 1847, a sign of his standing within the first professional artistic associations of the city. Despite these professional milestones, much of his personal history remains obscured by the passage of time. He died in Quebec City on 31 May 1856, leaving behind a body of work that captures a specific, transitional moment in the history of North American art.
