A Life of Academic Mastery and Artistic Pursuit
Born in Livorno, Matilde Meoni Malenchini was a distinguished Italian portrait and genre painter who practiced in the Academic style. Her formal training began in 1796 when she married Vincenzo Francesco Malenchini, a musician and painter, though she retained his name throughout her life. In 1807, she entered the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze to study under Pietro Benvenuti. During this formative period, she honed her skills by copying works by Dutch and old Italian masters at the Uffizi Gallery. Her talent was recognized in 1811 when she received a four-year annual stipend from Elisa Bonaparte to study in Rome at the Pontificia Accademia romana delle belle arti di San Luca.
The Roman Years and Later Life
While residing in Rome, Malenchini established a studio in the convent of Trinità dei Monti, aided by the patronage of General François de Miollis. Her work during this time included painting church interiors and collaborating with scholarship students from the Académie Française. In 1815, she was named a "Professor of Merit" at the Accademia di San Luca. Following a period of living in Brussels with the writer Louis de Potter, she eventually returned to Florence. In her final years, she turned to portraiture to maintain her livelihood. Her later life was marked by legal challenges, including a period of detention in Florence, and her final paintings depicted the interior of a prison.
