      Early Life and Artistic Training

Maxim Zyazin enters the historical record on August 24, 1846. He is born in the village of Saigatka, located within the Vyatka Governorate of the Russian Empire, specifically in the area of Chaykovsky. This rural beginning precedes a shift toward the formal structures of the imperial capital.

The years between 1866 and 1874 mark a period of intense academic rigor. Zyazin studies as a non-resident student at the Imperial Academy of Arts. His progress is marked by immediate recognition from the institution. In 1869, he secures silver medals of both the second and first class. These accolades signal a technical proficiency that catches the attention of the academy's faculty.

The momentum continues into the early 1870s. In 1872, Zyazin receives a prize of 100 rubles for his sketch titled "The Flood." This recognition arrives as he navigates the demanding requirements of his training, establishing his presence within the professional circles of Russian art before his career moves into teaching and religious commissions.

      Teaching and Professional Career

The mid-1870s find Zyazin moving through the educational landscapes of the Russian Empire. He begins this period teaching drawing at the Yenisei Men's Gymnasium in 1874. By the middle of the decade, his focus shifts toward Orenburg, where he holds teaching positions within various educational institutions. His professional standing grows steadily through these years of instruction.

In 1881, the official recognition of his skill arrives when he is awarded the title of class artist of the 3rd degree. This professional milestone precedes a long-term residency in Irkutsk. There, he settles into a multifaceted role as an educator. He teaches drawing at the Irkutsk Teacher Seminary and provides instruction in both drawing and penmanship at the Irkutsk Technical School and the N. P. Trapeznikov vocational school.

      Artistic Commissions and Religious Works

The year 1871 brings a significant imperial commission. At the request of the Yakut Spiritual Consistory, Zyazin executes a portrait of Emperor Alexander II. This task places his brushwork within the formal traditions of official state and religious portraiture. His professional reach extends into the classroom as well; he spends time teaching drawing and penmanship at the Irkutsk Technical School, shaping the technical skills of his students.

In Irkutsk, his focus shifts toward the sacred architecture of the city. He becomes deeply involved in the decoration of local churches, moving from the canvas to the structural elements of religious spaces. His hand appears in the dome of the Kazan Church, a structure built through the funds of A. M. Sibiryakov. There, he paints the Evangelists, integrating his art into the very ceiling of the sanctuary. His work in the Вознесенском соборе (Ascension Cathedral) continues this pattern, where he completes depictions of the Evangelists and the Miracles of St. Innocent.

      Notable Works and Artistic Output

The year 1872 marks a significant moment in his output with the creation of The icon-dauber. This work remains a central piece of his recorded history. His brush also moved toward more secular subjects, such as The Young Peasant Woman in 1877. These paintings reflect a focus on the human condition and the social realities of the era.

Beyond the canvas, Zyazin’s visual language extended into the realm of print and publication. He contributed drawings to the St. Petersburg journals Pchela and Krugosvor, reaching a broader audience through these periodicals. His graphic work also appeared in the 1885 East Siberian Calendar, where he produced a lithograph titled Yermak — Conqueror of Siberia.

      Later Years and Death

Irkutsk becomes the center of Zyazin's professional life in his final decades. In October and November of 1886, the city hosts a personal exhibition of his works, marking a significant moment in his regional presence. He continues to engage with the local art scene, eventually participating in a city art exhibition in April 1900. This final public appearance comes just months before his death.

The artist's health declines as he settles into his life in Irkutsk. He dies in 1900 from liver cirrhosis. His remains are interred at the Jerusalem Cemetery.

Where to See His Works Today

The physical remnants of Zyazin's career are scattered across several key institutions in Russia. His paintings reside within the collections of the Perm State Gallery and the Irkutsk Art Museum. These locations preserve the visual record of his development as a painter and his presence in the regional art scenes of the nineteenth century.

The Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts holds a significant piece of his output, specifically the work titled The icon-dauber. This painting remains a central part of the museum's holdings. Visitors seeking to observe his specific approach to subject matter can find his traces in these various repositories.
