      The Formative Years in Barmen

In the industrial heart of Barmen, now known as Wuppertal, a young Maximilian Klewer began his apprenticeship with the practicalities of the brush. Long before he sought the halls of higher learning, he spent his childhood years between 1901 and 1905 training as a sign painter at his hometown's arts and crafts school. This early foundation in lettering and pigment provided a sturdy base for the technical skill that would later define his hand. By 1911, his ambitions drew him to Berlin, where he entered the Hochschule für Bildende Künste to refine his vision.

His early explorations were shaped by the lingering whispers of Art Nouveau and the soft light of Late Impressionism. Yet, as the years progressed toward 1910, a shift occurred within his practice. He moved away from those decorative influences, finding a new clarity in a more naturalistic style. This period of growth saw him transition from a student of established trends to an artist seeking a more direct way of seeing the world.

A Professor's Era and Changing Visions

The years following the Great War brought both responsibility and a deepening of his artistic voice. Klewer returned to the academic sphere, leading a drawing class in 1919 and eventually securing a position as a professor of drawing that he would hold until 1943. It was during the interval between the two World Wars that his work underwent its most striking transformations. The naturalism of his youth began to merge with stranger, more unsettling elements.

His canvases and drawings started to exhibit features that drifted from the bizarre and comic toward the surreal. As he moved through this era, his work also leaned into the sharp, unsentimental clarity of New Objectivity. This period of intense stylistic evolution was captured frequently in his many self-portraits, works that allowed him to document his own changing perspective and the shifting moods of his era.

      Loss and Later Life

Tragedy struck in 1943 when a bombing raid tore through his life, destroying his flat and much of the work he had accumulated. This loss forced a relocation to Bad Soden, marking a new chapter far from the academic intensity of Berlin. In this quieter setting, Klewer continued to paint, though his focus shifted toward the needs of others. He found steady work as a portraitist and a painter of commissions, often turning his attention to religious subjects.

Though the scale of his output changed, the technical rigor of his training remained. His later years were spent navigating a world much altered by conflict, yet he maintained the discipline of a man who had once mastered the art of the sign painter and the professor of drawing alike. He left behind a body of work that reflects a life of profound stylistic movement, from the delicate edges of Impressionism to the starker realities of his later years.
