      The Precision of Presence

Born in 1981 in Šumperk, Czechoslovakia, Michal Ožibko began his relationship with oil paint at the age of fourteen. His early years were marked by a dual fascination with classical form and the raw energy of street art. While attending secondary technical school, he discovered graffiti, an experience that would later radicalize his perspective on subject matter. This tension between disciplined technique and spontaneous expression became a defining feature of his development. After serving in the Prague Castle Guard in 2001, he pursued formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, studying under Professor Zdeněk Beran in the studio of classical painting techniques.

His academic years were defined by a rigorous pursuit of mastery. He graduated in 2011, presenting a massive diploma thesis titled Pieta – Escape, a work measuring five by four meters. This period of study allowed him to refine a method involving many thin layers of glazing, a technique that grants his realistic works an intense visual depth. While he is often associated with hyperrealism, Ožib ibko avoids the trap of mere imitation. He frequently moves into non-figurative and abstract territories, where his brushwork becomes highly pastose and expressive.

      A Study in Dualism

The work of Michal Ožibko often exists in a state of controlled contradiction. His paintings frequently focus on the composition of everyday objects, imbuing them with an existential weight. He utilizes hyperrealistic visuality to capture the mundane, yet he also redefines historical themes by shifting their contexts through contemporary attributes. This approach prevents his realism from becoming stagnant. He has described this movement between styles as a form of self-defense against the risks of mannerism and cliché.

His technical repertoire is broad, spanning several distinct modes:

      • Hyperrealistic and photorealistic paintings characterized by meticulous detail.
      • Abstract works utilizing thick, expressive layers of paint.
      • Non-figurative compositions that explore pure color and form.

      Recognition and Reach

Ožibko’s presence on the international art scene was notably marked in 2010. His diptych iDeath earned the visitor's choice award at the BP Portrait Award exhibition held at the National Portrait Gallery in London. This achievement brought significant attention to his ability to engage an audience through precise, impactful imagery. His work has since been exhibited in various prestigious institutions, including the Olomouc Museum of Art and the Mánes Exhibition Hall in Prague.

Beyond the gallery walls, his career has included roles as an art director in graphic studios and advertising agencies. This professional background in visual communication complements his practice as a painter and graphic artist. His paintings have appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom, with notable shows such as Fascinations with Reality at the Olomouc Museum of Art. Through his varied approach, he continues to explore the boundaries between the seen and the felt.
