A Vision Beyond the Physical
Min Kyung Kwon creates art that feels as though it belongs to another realm entirely. Based in Adelaide, Australia, her work focuses on otherworldly beings that exist beyond our physical touch, visible only through the mind's eye. These figures often inhabit a space between the eerie and the sweet, carrying a quiet sense of innocence alongside a subtle sensuality. Her portraits draw from a deep well of mythology, legends, and folk storybooks, blending science with ancient tales to create characters that feel both strange and familiar.
The paintings are characterized by mysterious, ghost-like beings rendered in warm oil colors. There is a careful precision in her vision, where characters might appear chaotic or anomalous yet maintain eyes that hold a dreamy calm. This tension between the unsettling and the peaceful defines much of her aesthetic approach.
Roots and Early Influences
The foundations of Kwon's creative life began in South Korea. Growing up in Seoul, she spent much of her time immersed in the worlds of anime and manga. These early interests in character creation stayed with her as she developed her technical skills through after-school art and design classes during her teenage years. This period allowed her to master the fundamentals of drawing and painting long before she pursued formal higher education.
In 1998, she enrolled at Hongik University in Korea, where she earned a B.A. in Industrial Design. Following her studies, her professional path took her into the world of exhibition design. She worked for an exhibition company, creating visual arts and designing booths for major international events and trade fairs. Her clients included large-scale names such as Samsung Electronics and LG Home Appliances, a role that required a sharp eye for spatial design and visual impact.
Mythology and the G.H.O.S.T Series
Much of Kwon's recent work explores the intersection of the physical and spiritual realms through specific mythological inspirations. Her G.H.O.S.T series, for example, uses oil on wood panels to bring forth nymphs and spiritual beings derived from Greek and African legends. Each piece in this collection is built around a distinct color palette and shape, attempting to capture the feelings these ancient stories evoke.
In her work Widow, she looks to the story of Arachne from Greek mythology. The painting features a girl peering through a purple fog, reflecting the wisdom and intricate patterns of spider webs. Similarly, Diabolica draws from African mythology and the concept of the mantis. This piece explores the idea that life is renewed through death, using the figure of the mantis to personify transformation and the cycle of creation.
Her explorations also include the Siren, inspired by the dangerous creatures of Greek myth who lured sailors with their voices. Through these subjects, Kwon connects the viewer to the deep-seated human fascination with the unknown and the legendary.
Exhibitions and Recognition
Kwon's work has been presented in various galleries across different regions. Her paintings have been featured in group shows such as Best of the Hive at Hive Gallery in 2017, and she was invited to participate in the CARDED! exhibition at Hot Art Wet City Gallery in Vancouver during that same year. Her pieces have also found a place in the Korean Art Museum Association in Seoul.
More recently, her exhibitions have moved through spaces like Modern Eden Gallery in California, with shows including Covers and MASS: Small Works. These displays continue to present her unique vision of psychological and figurative art to a growing audience.
