      A Life Shaped by Tradition

Mina Lukich Kolokolnikov began his life in the village of Kravotyn, within the Tver gubernia. His early years were defined by his status as a serf belonging to the Pafnutievo-Borovsky Monastery. This connection to the monastery provided him with a foundation in religious art, as he studied icon painting under Vasily Vasilevsky. It was through this disciplined training that he first learned to handle the spiritual weight of imagery.

As his interests expanded beyond icons, he sought out new methods for capturing the human likeness. He found mentors in Ivan Nikitich Nikitin and Louis Caravaque, who introduced him to the nuances of portrait painting. This period of learning allowed him to bridge the gap between traditional religious subjects and the emerging secular styles of his era.

      The Studio and the Court

Kolokolnikov eventually moved toward the larger artistic circles of St. Petersburg. During his time there, he worked within the studio of Alexei Antropov. The influence of this environment was so profound that his brushwork often mirrors that of Antropont, making it difficult for historians to distinguish one hand from the other. This shared technique speaks to the deep immersion he had in the professional standards of the day.

His skills led him to contribute to significant architectural projects, including assisting with the decoration of the palace at Tsarskoye Selo. His work was not limited to private commissions; he also passed his knowledge down to others, such as his pupil Trifon Anisimov. The family itself was deeply rooted in this craft, as his brothers Ivan and Fedot were also painters.

      A Lasting Presence in Tver

While much of his professional life involved the movement between monastic life and the imperial atmosphere of St. Petersburg, his legacy remains anchored in the regional collections of his home territory. His portraits, such as the depiction of Prince I.T. Meshersky, continue to be held in the Tver Regional Picture Gallery.

His contributions to Russian art are found in these specific, tangible records:
