Vienna, 1877. Mina Loebell enters a world of shifting borders and imperial complexity. Born on November 5, 1877, in Austria, she begins a life that will eventually see her recognized in the annals of Austrian painting. She moves through the decades of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period of intense transformation within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Throughout her career, she is sometimes identified by the name M. Loebell.

Her presence in the art world is marked by a steady engagement with her craft. She remains rooted in the cultural landscape of Vienna, the city of her birth and her eventual passing. The years pass, spanning from her arrival in 1877 to her death in Vienna on May 13, 1956. Notable Works and Artistic Achievements

The year 1920 marks a concentrated period of portraiture for Loebell. She captures the likeness of Johan Paul Graaf van Limburg Stirum (1873-1948), who served as Gouverneur-generaal from 1916 to 1921. In the same year, her brush moves to the Van Heemstra family. She produces a portrait of Jan Matthieu Henri van Heemstra (1916-1959) and a separate portrait of Schelto van Heemstra (1912-1990). These works reflect a focus on the prominent figures of her era.

Her output continues into the late 1920s. Around 1928, she completes a portrait of Federal President Dr. Michael Hainisch. This work follows her established practice of documenting significant individuals through oil on canvas.

Where to See the Works Today

The physical presence of Loebell's brushwork survives in the collections of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Within its halls, one can encounter her 1920 oil on canvas, a portrait of Johan Paul Graaf van Limburg Stirum (1873-1948). The work, titled Johan Paul Graaf van Limburg Stirum (1873-1948). Gouverneur-generaal (1916-21), measures 168 cm in height and 98 cm in width.
