      Early Life and Family Background

Niccolò Corso, known to some as Niccolò di Lombarduccio, began his life in the mid-15th century. He was likely born in Liguria around 1446. His father, a man named Lombarduccio, came from Corsica. This connection to the island is reflected in the family name Corso, which carries those Corsican roots into his own identity.

The early years of his life remain largely quiet, leaving little trace of his formal training or his earliest movements. By 1469, he was working in Genoa, where he entered into a partnership with a painter and jewel-case maker named Gaspare dell’Acqua. They spent a brief time working together to decorate cassone panels, a collaboration that lasted only a few weeks before they went their separate ways.

      Artistic Activity in Liguria

Corso’s presence in the region is first recorded on 15 September 1469. During this time in Genoa, he entered into a partnership with Gaspare dell’Acqua, a painter and maker of jewel-cases from Pavia. The two men worked together on the decoration of cassone panels, though their collaboration lasted only a few weeks before they decided to dissolve the partnership.

Much of his life was spent working within the walls of the Olivetan monastery of St Jerome in Quarto, near Genoa. He first arrived at the monastery in 1489. After a period away, he returned to work there continuously from 1491 to 1494. His time at the monastery involved the creation of frescoes depicting the life of St. Benedict.

His hands were also busy in other local commissions. In 1491, he collaborated with Francesco de' Ferrari of Pavia on an Annunciazion with Saints for the church of Santa Maria della Passione in Genoa. He also worked alongside Davide da Staglieno on frescoes for the Chapel of Pope Sixtus IV, located in the Franciscan convent of Savona.

      Artistic Style and Key Works

The brushwork reveals a painter looking toward the north. There is a clear trace of Flemish influence in his compositions, specifically the manner of Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, alongside elements of Provençal painting. His early panels also suggest he was watching the work of Vincenzo Foppa during the 1460s. This blend of influences shows in how he handles light and form, moving between the traditions of the north and the local Italian style.

His hand appears most certain in the Madonna with Child and Angels, which is held in the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht. This work, dating from about 1465-70, shows a confident command of the subject. Much of his output remains tied to the religious life of Liguria. Most of his known pictures can still be found in the cloister and refectory of the monastery of the Olivetan Fathers at Quarto, near Genoa.
