The Visionary of Visual Music
Oskar Fischinger was a German-American animator, filmmaker, and painter who achieved distinction for creating abstract musical animation. His work often synchronized visual elements with music, a technique that predated computer graphics and music videos. Throughout his career, he produced over 50 short films and painted approximately 800 canvases. His technical ingenuity was evident early on when he invented a "Wax Slicing Machine", which used a vertical slicer and a movie camera's shutter to capture progressive cross-sections of molded wax and clay. This device allowed him to create moving backgrounds and magic scenes, some of which were used in the animated film The Adventures of Prince Achmed.
From Berlin to Hollywood
After working in Berlin, where he was known as the "Wizard of Friedrichstraße" for his special effects, Fischinger moved to Hollywood in 1936. During his time in the United States, he contributed to various cinematic works, including providing effects animation for the Blue Fairy's wand in Pinocchio and designing a sequence for Walt Disney's Fantasia. He also developed the Lumigraph, a visual instrument that produced imagery by pressing a rubberized screen against a narrow beam of colored light. In his later years, Fischinger turned increasingly to oil painting, producing works such as Motion Painting No. 1, which documented the act of painting by capturing single frames of each brush stroke.
