Life and Artistic Evolution
Born in Schmiedefeld, Germany, Otto Möller pursued a diverse career as a painter, graphic artist, etcher, and teacher. After completing his education, he moved to Berlin in 1903. His formal training took place between 1905 and 1907 at the Royal Art School under Philipp Franck, followed by a period in the studio of Lovis Corinth. This time spent with Corinth left a mark on his portraits and certain nude studies.
Möller's stylistic journey was marked by a transition through various movements, including Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubo-Futurism, and New Objectivity. He became a representative of the Berlin Novembergruppe, a revolutionary artists' association, and was active within its pedagogical wing. His work often focused on landscapes, street scenes, market impressions, and everyday life.
Teaching and Later Years
Throughout his life, Möller was deeply involved in art education. He served as a drawing teacher at the Paulsen-Realgymnasium in Berlin-Steglitz and later taught at the Prinz-Heinrich-Gymnasium in Schöneberg. His commitment to reforming art education led him to participate in the redesign of art pedagogy at the Central Institute for Teaching and Education.
In 1946, he took a professorship in painting and drawing within the art pedagogy department of the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. After retiring in 1955, he passed away in Berlin. His artistic legacy is preserved in various collections, including the Berlinische Galerie, the Altonaer Museum, and the Lindenau-Museum.
