The Life and Training of Otto von Pidoll
Born in Losheim am See, Germany, Otto von Pidoll was a painter who emerged from a noble family from Lorraine that had resided in Schloss Quint near Trier since the mid-18th century. His professional journey began with an apprenticeship as a painter and decorator, a craft he completed as a journeyman in 1926. This early training led to a period of wandering through various locations, including Trier, Cochem, Boppard, Koblenz, Linz, and Bad Godesberg. During his time in Munich, he worked under Professor Sebastian Hausinger, gaining experience as a church painter, restorer, and artist. Following a second period of travel that took him to Partenkirchen, he was admitted to the Reichskammer der bildenden Künste on October 1, 1940.
Later Years and Artistic Practice
After experiencing captivity during the Second World War, Pidoll returned to his studies and professional work. He studied and worked with the portrait painter Adolf Eifler in 1942, and subsequently resumed his work with Professor Hausinger starting in 1943. In the post-war era, he returned to Losheim am See. While he held a position at a wood fiber board factory, he remained an active painter. He lived out his life in Losheim, where he passed away in 1982.
