A life between Bamberg and Nuremberg

Paul Lautensack lived through a period of deep religious shifting in Germany. Born in Bamberg in 1478, his early years were shaped by the traditions of that city before he moved toward Nuremberg. In 1525, following his embrace of the Reformation, he left Bamberg behind to settle in Nuremberg. This move was not merely a change of scenery but a response to his changing convictions. His presence in Nuremberg was marked by both his art and his voice as an organist.

The streets of Nuremberg saw him at work, though his religious fervor eventually brought friction. By 1542, the intensity of his beliefs had become a public disturbance, leading to his expulsion from the city. He did not stay away forever, however, and was later permitted to return to the place where he had spent so much of his adult life. He remained in Nuremberg until his death in 1558.

      The imagery of the Apocalypse

His hands worked on many subjects drawn from the Apocalypse. These were not merely paintings but often accompanied his written thoughts. He composed treatises regarding these apocalyptic themes, which were later gathered and printed in Frankfurt in 1619. His work often drew from the visual language established by others, specifically the prints of Martin Schongauer and the woodcuts of Albrecht Dürer. Some of these pieces survive today, particularly those held in Bamberg.

The nature of his output was deeply tied to his spiritual observations. He used diagrams and drawings to explain his understandings of the divine. His work shows a focus on:

      • Religious subjects from the Apocalypse
      • Detailed manuscripts and drawings
      • Treatises on theological themes

      A family of makers

The craft of making was a shared language within his household. His children followed paths in similar trades, carrying forward the technical skills of their era. His son Hans Sebald Lautensack became a painter and printmaker, while his son Heinrich worked as a goldsmith and printer. Through these descendants, the influence of his time in Nuremberg continued through the next generation of German artisans.
