A Life of Science and Art
Born in Le Moule, Guadeloupe, Pierre Jérôme Lordon led a life that bridged the worlds of engineering and fine art. After arriving in the mainland at age thirteen, he attended the École centrale des travaux publics, which later became the École polytechnique. His early professional path was defined by technical service; he worked briefly as a geographic engineer and later served as a sub-lieutenant in the artillery in 1803. However, his dedication to the canvas eventually led him to resign his military post to pursue painting. He refined his skills in the studio of Pierre-Paul Prud'hon, with whom he shared a friendship, and also studied under the sculptor Lemire.
Artistic Achievements and Legacy
Lordon was a frequent contributor to the Salon between 1806 and 1838. His talent was recognized early when he received a gold medal at the Salon of 1808 for his work Communion d'Atala. His mastery of history painting was further evidenced at the Salon of Brussels in 1811, where Son Agar et son enfant renvoyés par Abraham earned a second prize. Throughout his career, he held the position of drawing master at the École Polytechnique until his death in Paris. His artistic legacy continued through his son, Jean-Abel Lordon, who was his student and also became a painter.
