A Life Captured in Oil

Pyotr Pnin lived during a period of profound change, leaving behind a small but distinct mark on the canvas. Born in 1803, his life was marked by the quiet rhythms of the early nineteenth century. While much of history focuses on grand political shifts, Pnin’s presence is felt through the intimate moments he chose to record. He passed away in 1837, a relatively short life that ended before the mid-century transformations could fully reshape the landscape of his era.

His work often turned toward the simple, shared experiences of those around him. In his painting titled Playing Checkers, created in 1824, he captured a group portrait that feels grounded and real. The piece uses oil on canvas to depict figures engaged in a quiet game, a scene that suggests a sense of companionship and stillness. This work is held today within the collection of The State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

The Details of His Craft

Pnin’s approach to painting was centered on the observation of life as it unfolded. He did not seek to reinvent the world, but rather to hold onto its fleeting instances. His technique involved a careful application of medium to capture the weight and texture of his subjects.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Genre: Group portrait
Notable Work: Playing Checkers (1824)

The physical presence of his work, such as the 107 cm by 134 cm dimensions of his checkers painting, allows for a window into the domestic or social settings of his time. Through these works, we see a man who looked closely at the people in his orbit, finding meaning in the way they sat together, focused on a game, oblivious to the passing years.
