The Life and Artistic Journey of Raymond Lasnier

Born in Quebec City, Canada, Raymond Lasnier was a painter who left a significant mark on the cultural landscape of Mauricie. His early life was marked by a challenge when he contracted polio at the age of three, which resulted in the loss of the use of both his legs. Despite this, he experienced a normal childhood, spending much of his time reading and drawing, even selling his first sketches for a small amount. By the age of sixteen, he was bilingual and had begun studying German and Russian, while also developing a talent for the piano. His formal artistic training began through correspondence with the International School of Drawing in Chicago when he was seventeen.

After moving to Trois-Rivières in 1944, Lasnier became a prominent figure in the local art scene. He initially gained recognition through commercial painting, frequently providing cover illustrations for the newspaper La Presse. His work was eventually recognized by various institutions, including the Musée du Québec, where he received special mentions in 1951 and 1957. He was a member of the Association des peintres professionnels du Québec and served as a teacher at the Centre des Arts de Trois-Rivières and the Centre des études universitaires de Trois-Rivières.

      Evolution of Style and Legacy

Lasnier's artistic style underwent a profound evolution throughout his career. Early in his development, he was influenced by Impressionism and Cubism. As his practice matured, he moved toward still lifes, forest landscapes, and water scenes. During the 1960s, his work became more defined through the use of nocturnes and barns, a period in which he began to adopt black as a primary color. By the mid-1960s, he explored abstraction to express purity and silence, before eventually returning to a form of transcended figuration that explored space through more streamlined, essential forms.

His contributions to the arts extended beyond the canvas, as he opened his own painting school and participated in numerous exhibitions across Quebec, including the Salon du Printemps at the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal. Following his death in Trois-Rivières, his legacy was honored by the naming of the Centre d'exposition Raymond-Lasnier. His works are held in several notable collections, including the Musée Des Beaux in Québec City.
