Early Life, Family and Training
Regina Seiden arrives in the landscape of Quebec on 4 July 1897, born in Rigaud. The quietude of her birthplace gives way to the urban density of Montreal in 1905, when her family makes the move. It is here, within the walls of the Académie Marie-Rose, that her formal education begins. Between 1905 and 1912, this French Catholic school provides the setting where her innate talents as a painter are first encouraged and explored.
The trajectory of her training shifts toward more specialized instruction as she enters the Art Association of Montreal. From 1913 to 1918, she navigates the studio environments of the institution, refining her technical capabilities under the guidance of established figures. She studies under William Brymner, Edmond Dyonnet, and Maurice Cullen. These years of rigorous study establish the foundation for her later focus on figurative work and portraiture.
Artistic Activity in Paris
Paris beckons in 1921. Seiden arrives in the city to refine her craft, enrolling at the Académie Julian. She spends a year within its walls, absorbing the rigorous training of the French tradition. The city provides a backdrop for her developing technical skill, a period of intense focus before the shifts in her personal life begin to alter her trajectory.
The atmosphere changes in 1926. While navigating the Parisian art scene, she meets Eric Goldberg, a fellow artist. Their connection is immediate and profound. By 1928, the two are married. This union marks a significant transition; the professional momentum of her early years begins to give way to the complexities of her new life and her husband's career.

Technique and Style
The focus remains fixed on the human form. Seiden gravitates toward figurative work, finding her most resonant subjects in portraits. She develops a particular specialty in depicting women, often capturing the likenesses of immigrants arriving in Canada. These figures inhabit more than just space; they occupy interiors, genre scenes, and landscapes that frame their presence. Her brushwork avoids mere decoration, favoring a technical refinement that prioritizes a quiet psychological depth over outward spectacle.
The compositions often feel still, as if a moment has been held in suspension. In her landscapes and genre scenes, the environment serves to ground the subject rather than distract from it. This precision extends to her handling of light and form, where the internal life of the sitter becomes the primary subject. The work does not shout; it observes. Even in her depictions of urban settings, such as the streets of Paris, the focus remains on the structural and atmospheric reality of the scene.

Later Years and Death
Life in Montreal takes center stage after the years spent in Paris. For two decades, Seiden teaches art at the Westmount synagogue, the religious center for her and her husband. The studio remains quiet for a long period. She stops painting entirely following her marriage to Eric Goldberg, dedicating her focus to their relationship and his career.
The silence breaks in 1969. Following the death of Goldberg, Seiden returns to her brushes. She begins to paint again, though she never regains the momentum of her early years. She remains in Montreal until her death on 11 January 1991 in Montreal, Quebec.
