      The Movement of the Elements

Oyonnax, France, 1919. A life begins in the Ain region, eventually leading to the studios of the Beaux-Arts de Paris. By 1945, the focus shifts to Paris, a city where the air is thick with the tension of new artistic directions. The work starts to take shape through oil painting and line drawings, but the true shift occurs when the artist encounters the sea.

The coast of Brittany, between 1954 and 1955, provides a shock of movement. There is the crashing of waves, the weight of foam, and the vastness of the sky. This encounter transforms the brushwork into something more gestural. The compositions begin to mirror the physical energy of the ocean. He finds a language in the swell and the wind, translating the liquid motion of the Atlantic onto polychrome canvases of black, violet, and blue.

Lines of Force and Cosmic Echoes

The technique relies on bold, sweeping lines and color inks on paper. The work moves through series, such as the Chevaux de mer and Les Javelots de la mer. These are not mere landscapes but explorations of movement itself. In 1966, a new connection emerges through contact with scientific phenomena at CERN and the École de chimie in Geneva. The artist observes a striking similarity between his abstract forms and the photographic records of physical and cosmic events.

The art becomes a bridge between the natural world and the microscopic or celestial scale. The following elements define the visual language:

      • Lyrical Abstraction: A focus on the spontaneous gesture and the flow of color.
      • Nature as Catalyst: The sea, waves, and sky providing the structural rhythm for the work.
      • Scientific Resonance: The intersection of abstract painting with physical phenomena.

      The Final Variations

After 1986, the focus narrows to a dedicated study of series and their variations. The artist continues to refine the relationship between the human form, nature, and the universe until his death in Paris in 2002. His legacy remains held in collections such as the Musée d'Évreux, the Musée des beaux-arts de Brest, and the Musée d'art de Toulon.
