Artistic Evolution and Style
Rik Slabbinck was a Belgian painter born in Bruges. His early training took place at the Academy of Bruges, where he attended evening courses, and at Saint-Lucas in Ghent. During the period of 1936 to 1938, he worked in the studio of Constant Permeke. His early work was dominated by Flemish expressionism until 1945. Following this period, he moved away from expressionist deformation and monochrome tones, adopting a bright palette of warm colors characterized by subtle chiaroscuro. He placed careful attention to the play of shadows and the relief of the painted surface.
In his later years, specifically from the 1950s onward, Slabbinck's colors were determined by composition rather than reality. He developed a preference for using a palette knife, which allowed him to work on vast layers of paint, while using brushes to create oil sketches. This technique resulted in works that exude a strong force of synthesis.
Exhibitions and Recognition
Slabbinck was a co-founder of the La Jeune Peinture belge movement in 1945, though he resigned in 1947. He was also a co-founder of the Apport group in 1941. His work has been featured in various international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennales in 1948 and 1958, the São Paulo Biennale in 1951, and the Menton Biennale in 1953.
