The Life and Academic Journey of Ron Bloore

Ronald Langley Bloore was a Canadian abstract painter and educator. Born in Brampton, Canada, his academic foundation in art and archaeology began at the University of Toronto, where he earned a B.A. in 1949. His scholarly pursuits took him to the New York University Institute of Fine Arts and Washington University in St. Louis, where he studied and served as an instructor. His formal training continued at the Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London before he returned to Canada to teach at the University of Toronto.

His career saw him serve as the director at the Norman Mackenzie Gallery of Regina College and as an instructor at the University of Saskatchewan. Later, he held a position as a professor at York University, where he served from 1966 to 1990. Throughout his career, Bloore was recognized for his contributions to the visual arts, receiving honors such as the Centennial Medal, the Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award, and being named a Member of the Order of Canada.

      Artistic Style and Notable Works

As a member of the Regina Five, Bloore’s work was characterized by a more geometrically ordered approach compared to other contemporary painters. He was particularly noted for his white-on-white technique, a method that utilized layers of white oil paint in varying shades, finishes, and surfaces. This technique was exemplified in his 1965 and 1966 mural, White on White, created for the entranceway of the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Charlottetown.

Beyond his personal practice, Bloore was a writer who brought attention to the work of folk artist Jan Gerrit Wyers. His professional achievements were marked by several honorary degrees and his status as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
