      A Life in Berlin

Born in Berlin in 1864, Sabine Lepsius grew up surrounded by the tools of her craft. Her father, Gustav Graef, was a portrait painter, and it was under his guidance that she first learned to handle a brush. This early education shaped much of her later career. She lived a life deeply connected to the intellectual circles of her time, particularly through her marriage in 1892 to the painter Reinhold Lepsius. Together, they became well-known figures in the local social scene.

Her home in Berlin-Westend functioned as a gathering place for many thinkers and writers. People like Rainer Maria Rilke and Georg Simmel were among those who visited her salon. These gatherings were not merely social events but intersections of art and thought. She was also a close follower of the poet Stefan George, a connection that would later be reflected in her written memoirs.

      The Art of the Portrait

Lepsius focused her talents on portraiture, producing approximately 280 portraits during her lifetime. Her work was held in high regard by the wealthy and the business community. She was a founding member of the Berlin Secession and continued to exhibit with this group until 1913. In 1893, her reach extended beyond Germany when she exhibited at the Woman's Building during the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

Her skill was evident even in her youth; a self-portrait she completed at age twenty-one remains part of the collections at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. While much of her work captured the prominent figures of her era, a significant portion of her portraits featured members of the Jewish community. Tragically, many of these specific works were lost or destroyed during the Second World War.

      Later Years and Legacy

The later years of her life were marked by both personal loss and literary pursuits. The death of her son, Stefan, in World War I was a profound tragedy that affected her family deeply. Beyond the canvas, she turned to writing, publishing works such as Vom deutschen Lebensstil in 1916 and Stefan George: Geschichte einer Freundschaft in 1935. These writings offer a glimpse into the personal relationships that defined her era.

She passed away in Bayreuth in 1942. Today, her artistic presence is maintained through pieces held in institutions such as the Museum Frieder Burda and the Museum Barberini. Her life remains documented not only through her paintings but also through the posthumous publication of her memoirs, which provide a look at Berlin life around the turn of the century.
