The Painter of Form and Color

Sven Erixson, known to many by the moniker "X-et," lived a life defined by the tactile reality of paint and the structured beauty of shape. Born in Tumba in 1899, his path into the arts was not one of sudden inspiration but of steady, disciplined labor. At fourteen, he began an apprenticeship with a master painter, learning the fundamental chemistry of pigments and the patience required for craft. This early immersion in the practicalities of the trade provided a foundation that academic study alone could not offer. He later moved through the halls of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm, eventually returning to those same institutions as a professor of painting between 1943 and 1953.

His work was never confined to a single, narrow vision. While he found solace in the quietude of interiors and the delicate arrangement of floral pieces, he also sought the expansive energy of cityscapes and port scenes. His hand was equally at home in the creation of large-scale frescoes, such as those found in the Holy Cross Chapel at Woodland Cemetery or the Huddinge town hall. In these public works, he wove personal memories of his childhood in a railroad town into the very fabric of the architecture. He possessed a versatile imagination that extended to the stage, designing theatrical decor for Garcia Lorca's Blood Wedding and creating costume sketches for the opera Aniara.

      A Study of Diverse Influences

Erixson’s aesthetic was shaped by a restless curiosity about the masters who preceded him. He traveled through Spain and the south of France, not merely as a tourist, but as a student of light and line. In the Museo del Prado, he studied the gravity of Goya and Velazquez; in Toledo, he looked to El Greco. His palette and approach were further informed by the bold expressions found in the works of Paul Klee, Lovis Corinth, Gustav Klimt, and Egon Schiele. This wide-ranging education allowed him to bridge the gap between the rustic charm of Medieval Folk art and the more rigorous structures of German Expressionism.

In 1932, he became a central figure in the Stockholm art scene by co-founding the 'Color and Shape' (Färg och Form) gallery. This initiative reflected his core interest in the fundamental elements of visual language. His paintings often displayed a profound preoccupation with the physical presence of the medium itself. In works like Boy in the Garden, the thick, deliberate application of paint invites a close inspection of the artist's touch. Whether depicting the movement of geese in Nils Holgersson or the stillness of a fishing pier in Svolvaer, his focus remained on how color and form could communicate the essence of a subject.

      A Life in Layers

The domestic life of Erixson was as much an artistic affair as his professional one. Married to Ingeborg Erixson, he raised two children who would also find their place in the creative landscape: his son Sverre became an artist, and his daughter Irma found success as an actress. His career was a long arc of development, moving from the manual skills of a young apprentice to the intellectual authority of a professor.

By the time of his death in Saltsjobaden in 1970, Erixson had left behind a body of work that remains integrated into the fabric of Swedish art history. His paintings are held in most major Swedish art museums, representing a period of significant modern evolution. He did not seek to reinvent the world through abstraction alone, but rather to find new ways to see it through the interplay of light, pigment, and memory.
