The Artistic Evolution of Ulrich Erben
Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, Ulrich Erben is a painter whose career has been shaped by significant periods in Italy and the United States. After studying painting, graphic techniques, fresco painting, and drawing at academies in Hamburg, Urbino, Venice, Munich, and Berlin, his early work focused on landscapes and still lifes before transitioning toward geometric forms. His time in the United States led to a reduction in the use of forms and colors, establishing the landscape as a central category of his art. Erben served as a Professor of Painting at the Kunstakademie Münster from 1980 to 2005, and he is currently a professor emeritus there.
His practice is characterized by a mastery of the color field style, creating tension between surface structure, the method of applying paint, and the relationship between various shades of color or white on a flat plane. His work has evolved through several distinct phases, including the weiße Bilder (white paintings) of the late 1960s and 1970s, which explored light effects and the boundaries of connection. Later periods saw the development of the prima-vista series, the Farben der Erinnerung (Colors of Memory) series, and the Festlegung des Unbegrenzten (Fixing of the Unbounded) works, which utilize muted color transitions to achieve a sense of luminous quietude.
