The Venetian Roots of a Mosaicist

The story begins in Quinto di Treviso, Italy, where Vincenzo Vanin is born in 1941. His early years are shaped by the textures of his birthplace, a setting that eventually leads him to the Istituto Statale D’Arte in Venice. Under the guidance of Professors Gregorini and A. Gatto, he begins to master the delicate balance between painting and the structural demands of mosaic. By 1956, the first exhibitions of his paintings and mosaics emerge, marking the start of a career defined by a physical, tactile engagement with medium.

In 1965, the trajectory shifts. Vanin moves to Canada, a transition that expands his technical scope. In Toronto, he establishes the Church Art Studio, a space where his focus turns toward the monumental and the sacred. He spends years working on large-scale religious and public mosaics, leaving a permanent mark on the architecture of the community through works in churches such as S. Mary, S. Aphonsus, and S. Pio X.

      Technical Mastery and Materiality

Vanin’s practice is a study in the tension between the static and the kinetic. He does not merely apply color; he manipulates matter. His work often involves a complex interplay of diverse materials, seeking to breathe life into cold substances. He works with:

      • Oil on canvas
      • Mosaic and murrine
      • Marble and wood
      • Graphics and various sculptural supports

His return to Italy in 1973 brings him back to the academic rigor of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, where he studies under Maestro Emilio Vedova. This period refines his ability to infuse his creations with a sense of movement. He uses murrine and marble to create a three-dimensional dynamism, ensuring that the pieces do not simply sit on a surface but seem to pulse with an internal energy.

A Legacy of Form and Movement

The later years of his career see a continued dialogue between Italy and the international art scene. His exhibitions, such as "DINAMISMO TRIDIMENSIONALE" in Clusone, highlight his ability to transform small, fragmented pieces into a cohesive, living entity. He has collaborated with various artists, including Rosemberg and Piere Restany, maintaining a presence in both private and public spheres.

His contribution to the visual arts is anchored by works like Folklore, a 1998 oil painting on canvas held in the Považská galéria umenia, Žilina. This piece, measuring 100.0 cm in height and 70.0 cm in width, remains a significant part of his recorded output, representing the intersection of his painterly skill and his deep understanding of cultural form.
