The shifting colors of a wandering eye

Wenzel Hablik moved through the world with a restless gaze, his canvases changing as his travels took him from the familiar landscapes of Bohemia to the far reaches of South America and the Ottoman Empire. In his early years, his brush followed the light of the Berlin Secessionist movement, leaning into an Impressionist style. One can see this in 1906, when he painted The Innkeeper of Schlossberg near Brüx. The face of the innkeeper holds clashes of bright orange against teal and yellow, a small, concentrated moment of color amidst browns and greens. That same year, his work turned toward the mountains in Sunset Mont Blanc. Here, the sky is heavy with purple clouds and deep reds, while a single hiker looks out over blue peaks. The paint sits thick on the surface, applied with an impasto stroke that recalls the texture of Van Gogh.

His time in Italy, Greece, and Constantinople left marks on his vision. He looked closely at the squat, hexagonal shapes found in old Christian and Eastern Orthodox churches. These geometric forms began to merge with his earlier drawings of fairy tale castles. The soft edges of his landscapes started to harden into something more structured.

      Architectural visions and cosmic shifts

As the industrial age progressed, Hablik’s work moved away from naturalism toward a vision of technological utopia. He became preoccupied with the idea of glass and crystal structures, much like the great exhibition palaces of Europe. His paintings began to feature tessellated colosseums and massive, geometric domes that seemed to rise from the earth like monuments. In Self-supporting dome with five mountain peaks as base, created between 1918 and 1924, a pink megalith sits under an angelic halo, built upon grand arches and heavy stone.

This interest in structure eventually expanded into the heavens. His style shifted from the earthbound to the celestial, as seen in Firmament from 1913. In this work, known planets and imagined worlds swirl together in a high-speed movement through space. The lines became more rectilinear and sharp, influenced by the energy of Italian Futurism. He replaced the smooth curves of nature with the hard edges of machinery and air colonies.

      A life shaped by change

The trajectory of his career reflected the heavy shifts of his era in Germany. He began within the traditions of Romanticism, but the onset of World War I brought a profound internal change. While he initially held views that supported the war, the aftermath transformed him into a pacifist. This shift in belief mirrored the fragmentation in his art, where colorful boxes and cylinders appear in works like Destruction. His later years saw him settling in Itzehoe, Germany, where even his living space reflected his preoccupation with color, specifically a dining room mural composed of interlaced rainbow blocks.
