A Life Shaped by Glass and Light
Jan Hendrik Witjens, known to many as Willem, did not begin his professional life with a brush in hand. His early years were defined by the practical, tactile work of a glazier. This foundation in glasswork likely informed his later sensitivity to how light interacts with surfaces, a quality that would eventually define his transition into a painter and draughtsperson. While his origins are debated between The Hague and Den Bosch, his path led him toward a dedicated life of art, eventually earning him a royal subsidy between 1915 and 1917.
His hands, once accustomed to the precision of glass, found a new purpose in capturing the world through oil, watercolor, and drawing. He was a man of many roles: a student of the light, a restorer of the Royal Palace at the Lange Voorhout in The Hague, and a teacher who helped shape the hands of other painters. He was a member of various art societies, finding his place within the creative communities of his time.
The Landscapes of Memory
Witjens possessed a particular affinity for the quietude of the natural world. He is perhaps most recognized for his snowscapes and the landscapes of the Bommerwaard, where he captured the stillness of the Dutch countryside. His subjects were varied, ranging from the intimate details of still lifes and the human form in nudes to the sprawling geometry of cityscapes. He had a way of grounding his work in specific places, whether it was the familiar terrain of the Netherlands or the sun-drenched corners of Europe.
His travels were not merely for leisure but were essential to his development as a visual storyteller. He moved through Canada, the United States, and Spain, bringing back the impressions of these distant lands to his canvas. In 1954, while staying in Torremolinos, Malaga, he painted Castillo Santa Clara, an oil on board that remains a record of his time in Spain.
A Quiet Residence in Berne
In 1941, Witjens moved into Het Oude Huis in Berne, a residence that was part of a medieval abbey. This setting, located northwest of Den Bosch, provided a backdrop to his later years. His life was one of steady movement between the practicalities of his early trade and the contemplative nature of his later art. He remained active in his craft until his death in 1962, leaving behind a body of work that reflects a life spent observing the subtle shifts of light and shadow across the landscapes he encountered.
