      The Oslo Lines

Oslo, 4 April 1904. Johan Wilhelm Midelfart enters the world in Norway, a man whose hands would eventually navigate both the brush and the political pamphlet. He moves through the early decades of the twentieth century not merely as a painter, but as an illustrator and a socialist, finding ways to weave his convictions into the very grain of his drawings. His work carries the weight of real-world friction.

The 1930s bring a shift toward the heavy atmosphere of conflict. In Madrid, the air is thick with the tension of 1936. Midelfart captures the raw reality of the Spanish Civil War through works like Drept gate, Madrid and Bombardement, Madrid. He does not look away from the refugees in Alicante or the shelters in Madrid. These are not mere sketches; they are visual records of displacement and violence.

      Walls of Growth

A significant moment arrives within the architecture of Norway itself. In the banquet hall of the Oslo City Hall, Midelfart leaves a permanent mark with his wall painting Det gror ('It grows'). This work anchors his legacy to the civic heart of the city. It is a large-scale commitment that moves beyond the portable canvas into the realm of public space.

His technical range remains anchored in oil on canvas, even as his subjects shift from the political turmoil of Spain to the quietude of the Norwegian landscape. He captures the light over Drammensfjorden and the stillness of Garmokirken. There is a steady presence in his depictions of harbors and coastal landscapes, such as Sittende mann i kystlandskap.

      The Final Frames

The later years see him documenting the world through a lens of observation that spans from Venice to Paris. In 1956, he captures the early morning light at Madonna della Salute in Venezia. By 1955, his brush is at work on Notre-Dame, Paris, a piece held within the collections of the Nasjonalmuseet.

The trajectory ends where it began. On 28 October 1975, in Oslo, the life of the painter and illustrator concludes. He leaves behind a body of work that spans decades of European history, from the streets of Madrid to the halls of Norwegian governance.
