William James Laidlay was born on 12 August 1846 in Calcutta, British India. He was the son of John Watson Laidlay. His early years were shaped by a move from the heat of Calcutta to the classrooms of the Loretto School in Scotland. This schooling provided the foundation for his later studies at Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he spent his student years before graduating in 1872.

His path was not solely defined by the brush. After his time at Cambridge, he moved toward the legal profession, becoming a student of the Middle Temple and eventually being called to the bar in April 1875. However, the pull of visual art remained. Between 1879 and 1885, he lived in Paris to study art. These years in France provided the technical grounding that would define his later output.

Professional Career and Artistic Activity

Laidlay’s professional life followed a path through the law before he turned fully toward the canvas. After studying at the Middle Temple, he was called to the bar in April 1875. His legal work included membership in the Faculty of Advocates in 1874 and serving on the Scottish courts circuit until 1878. During this period, he also found time for cricket, appearing in a first-class match for the North against the South at Chelsea.

The shift toward painting became permanent after he spent several years studying art in Paris between 1879 and 1885. His presence in the art world grew through regular exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Paris Salon, and the New Gallery. In 1885, he became a founding member of the New English Art Club, helping to establish a new direction for the group.

His later years were spent in various locations, including the Isle of Wight, where he died at Glenbrook House in Freshwater. His work often captured specific, quiet scenes, such as:

His brushwork often turned toward the movement of the natural world, capturing light and atmosphere through oil on canvas. He also worked with different materials, such as the oil on board used for Ballantrae harbour, Scotland. Each piece reflects a quiet attention to the textures of the landscape, whether it be the movement of clouds or the stillness of a harbor.
