A Life Rooted in the Desert

Wingu Tingima was an Aboriginal artist from central Australia and a member of the Pitjantjatjara people. Born in the Great Victoria Desert, she grew up living a traditional semi-nomadic way of life in the bush around Kuru Ala, without contact with Western civilization. From a young age, she was involved in traditional desert crafts, learning from her mother and aunts how to weave hair-string belts and head rings from hair, fur, feathers, and spinifex. She also learned to spin hair-string on a traditional hand-held spindle and carve wooden tools such as wana, piti, wira, and kaṉilpa.

As she grew older, she settled at the mission at Ernabella, where she worked spinning sheep's wool to make rugs and other items. Later, she moved to the community of Irrunytju and also worked in Nyapaṟi. Wingu was one of the first artists at the Irrunytju Arts co-operative and later worked at the Tjungu Palya centre.

      Artistic Expression and Legacy

Wingu Tingima's painting focused on the spiritual stories of her Dreaming, specifically the Kungkarungkara (Minyma Tjuta, or Seven Sisters) associated with the sacred women's place of Kuru Ala. Her work utilized traditional images, patterns, and icons, though she did not illustrate them explicitly; instead, the images remained obscured and the meaning hidden. Her style was characterized by the use of lighter shades of colour and curvier lines.

Her work has been recognized through several exhibitions and accolades:

Her paintings are held in various major collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Australian National University.
