      Aleksandr Rodchenko, geboren am 5. Dezember 1891 in St. Petersburg, war eine Schlüsselfigur der russischen Avantgarde und ein Künstler, dessen Werk die Kunstwelt nachhaltig prägte. Seine Lebensgeschichte ist geprägt von einer tiefen politischen Überzeugung, einem unermüdlichen Experimentierdrang und einer radikalen Ablehnung traditioneller künstlerischer Konventionen. Rodchenko’s Familie zog nach Kasan um, nachdem sein Vater 1909 verstorben war, und seine frühe künstlerische Entwicklung wurde maßgeblich von der Atmosphäre dieser pulsierenden Stadt beeinflusst. Zunächst autodidaktisch tätig, fand er Inspiration in Kunstzeitschriften und begann im Jahr 1910 sein Studium an der Kasaner Kunstschule unter Nikolai Fechin und Georgii Medvedev – dort lernte er auch seine zukünftige Frau, Varvara Stepanova, kennen.
