Alfred William Hunt (15. November 1830 – 3. Mai 1896) war ein englischer Maler, der für seine ausdrucksstarken und atmosphärischen Landschaftsbilder bekannt ist. Er schloss die Lücke zwischen akademischer Tradition und der aufkommenden Präraffaelischen Ästhetik und hinterließ einen bleibenden Eindruck in der viktorianischen Kunst.
Geboren 1830 in Liverpool, war Hunt der Sohn von Andrew Hunt, ebenfalls ein Landschaftsmaler. Er zeigte früh künstlerisches Talent und zeichnete während seines Schulbesuchs an der Liverpool Collegiate School. Nach Ratschlägen seines Vaters studierte er klassische Studien am Corpus Christi College, Oxford, im Jahr 1848. Seine akademische Karriere blühte auf; er gewann 1851 den Newdigate-Preis für Poesie mit “Nineveh” und wurde 1853 Fellow von Corpus.
Trotz seines Erfolgs in der Akademie, gab Hunt seine künstlerischen Bemühungen nicht auf. Angeleitet vom einflussreichen Kunstkritiker John Ruskin, begann er 1854 mit der Ausstellung im Royal Academy. Dies markierte einen Wendepunkt, da er sich zunehmend der Landschaftsmalerei in Öl und Aquarell widmete.

Im Jahr 1861 heiratete Hunt Margaret Raine Hunt, die selbst eine erfolgreiche Schriftstellerin war. Ihre Tochter Violet Hunt wurde ebenfalls als Schriftstellerin bekannt. Seine Nichte Jessie Macgregor war eine weitere Künstlerin, deren Werke in der Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool ausgestellt wurden.
Alfred William Hunt nimmt einen wichtigen Platz in der viktorianischen Kunstgeschichte ein. Er verband akademische Ausbildung mit Präraffaelischen Prinzipien und schuf Landschaften, die sowohl technisch versiert als auch emotional resonanzfähig waren. Er wird mit seiner Frau und Tochter auf dem Brookwood Cemetery beerdigt.
