      Frühes Leben und Ausbildung

      • Geboren: 1891 in Columbus, Georgia, war Alma Woodsey Thomas das älteste von vier Kindern. Ihre Eltern waren John Harris Thomas, ein Geschäftsmann, und Amelia Cantey Thomas, eine Bekleidungsdesignerin.
      • Aufgrund rassistischer Gewalt und auf der Suche nach besseren Bildungsmöglichkeiten zog die Familie 1907 in das Logan-Circle-Viertel von Washington, D.C.
      • Frühe künstlerische Neigungen: Schon in jungen Jahren zeigte Thomas ein besonderes Talent für die Kunst, indem sie zu Hause Puppen und Skulpturen erschuf.
      • Sie besuchte die Armstrong Technical High School, wo sie ihren ersten formellen Kunstunterricht erhielt.
      • Von 1911 bis 1913 studierte Thomas an der Miner Normal School (später University of the District of Columbia) mit dem Schwerpunkt Kindergartenpädagogik.

      • Von 1916 bis 1923 unterrichtete sie im Kindergarten des Thomas Garrett Settlement House in Wilmington, Delaware.
