Jacob Abraham Camille Pissarro wurde am 10. Juli 1830 in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas (damals die Dänische Westindien, heute die US-Virginischen Inseln) geboren. Sein Vater, Frederick Abraham Gabriel Pissarro, stammte aus portugiesisch-jüdischer Abstammung mit französischer Staatsbürgerschaft, und seine Mutter, Rachel Manzano-Pomié, kam aus einer französischen jüdischen Familie. Seine Erziehung war aufgrund der Herkunft und Umstände seiner Eltern etwas ungewöhnlich.
