      Frühes Leben und Ausbildung

      Marc-Charles-Gabriel Gleyre, ein Schweizer Künstler, wurde am 2. Mai 1806 in Chevilly bei Lausanne geboren. Nach dem frühen Tod seiner Eltern wurde Gleyre von einem Onkel in Lyon, Frankreich, aufgezogen. Er begann seine künstlerische Ausbildung unter Bonnefond in Lyon, bevor er nach Paris zog, wo er sich an der École des Beaux-Arts unter Hersent einschrieb.

      Künstlerische Karriere und Stil

      Gleyres Werk ist geprägt von Akademismus und Orientalismus. Seine Reisen mit dem amerikanischen Reisenden John Lowell Jr. ins östliche Mittelmeer in den Jahren 1834-1835 beeinflussten seinen Stil maßgeblich.
