      Geboren 1859 in Gravesend, Kent, wuchs Charles James Adams als zweites Kind des Konditormeisters Charles Adams und seiner Frau Sarah auf. Seine frühen Jahre in England legten den Grundstein für ein Leben, das der Beobachtung der natürlichen Welt gewidmet war. Seine formale Ausbildung erhielt er an der Leicester School of Art unter Wilmot Pilsbury – eine Zeit, die für seine technische Meisterschaft von entscheidender Bedeutung war.
