Seine künstlerische Entwicklung setzte sich in Holland fort, wo er durch den Beitritt zur Malerzunft in Den Haag professionelle Anerkennung erlangte.       Der Lehrer eines Meisters

      Das vielleicht bedeutendste Kapitel in Alexanders Leben war seine Rolle als Mentor. In Newport, Rhode Island, begegnete er dem jungen Gilbert Stuart – eine Begegnung, die den Lauf der amerikanischen Kunstgeschichte für immer verändern sollte. Als er das Potenzial des vierzehnjährigen Jungen erkannte, nahm Alexander Stuart als Lehrling auf. Diese Beziehung war weit mehr als nur eine rein berufliche Vereinbarung; es war die Weitergabe der Fackel von den Traditionen der Alten Welt an die Neue. Die beiden reisten gemeinsam durch die Kolonien und kehrten schließlich 1 1771 nach Edinburgh zurück, wo das Band zwischen Meister und Schüler bis zu Alexanders plötzlichem Tod unerschütterlich blieb.

      Alexanders Leben war von künstlerischen Triumphen ebenso wie von persönlichen Entbehrungen geprägt. In Burlington, New Jersey, residierte er sogar im Herrenhaus des Gouverneurs und nutzte solch hochkarätige Verbindungen, um Modelle für seine Porträts zu finden. Obwohl sein Leben in Edinburgh jäh endete, bleibt die Wirkung seines Werkes in den Sammlungen renommierter Institutionen bis heute sichtbar.
