      Frühes Leben und Ausbildung

      • Dame Laura Knight (1877–1970) wurde als Laura Johnson am 4. August 1877 in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, England, als jüngste von drei Töchtern geboren.
      • Ihr Vater, Charles Johnson, verließ die Familie kurz nach ihrer Geburt und ließ ihre Mutter, Charlotte Johnson, mit der Erziehung der Kinder inmitten finanzieller Not zurück.
      • Knights Großvater besaß eine Spitzenfabrik, die aufgrund technologischer Fortschritte in Konkurs ging und die Familienstabilität beeinträchtigte.
      • 1889 wurde sie mit Verwandten, die im Spitzenhandwerk tätig waren, nach Nordfrankreich geschickt, musste aber nach deren Bankrott zurückkehren.
      • Sie begann ihre künstlerische Ausbildung bereits im Alter von 13 Jahren als „Kunststudentin“ an der Nottingham School of Art, dank der Bemühungen ihrer Mutter.
      • Mit fünfzehn Jahren übernahm Knight die Unterrichtspflicht ihrer Mutter, als Charlotte schwer an Krebs erkrankte.

      Frühe Karriere & Die Newlyn School
