      Frühes Leben und Ausbildung

      Giuseppe Abbati wurde am 13. Januar 1836 in Neapel, Italien, geboren. Dort erhielt er seine anfängliche künstlerische Ausbildung von seinem Vater Vincenzo Abbati, der sich auf Gemälde architektonischer Innenräume spezialisiert hatte. Diese frühe Einflüsse sind deutlich in Giuseppe’s ersten Werken zu sehen, die ebenfalls Innenansichten darstellten.

      Militärische Dienste und die Macchiaioli

      Abbattis Leben nahm eine dramatische Wendung, als er am 1860er Feldzug für die italienische Einigung von Garibaldi teilnahm. Während der Schlacht von Capua verlor er tragisch sein rechtes Auge. Nach dieser Erfahrung zog er nach Florenz, ein entscheidender Moment, der seinen künstlerischen Weg prägte. In Florenz, im berühmten Caffè Michelangiolo, knüpfte er Kontakte zu Schlüsselfiguren, die als die Macchiaioli bekannt wurden – Giovanni Fattori, Silvestro Lega und andere.

      Künstlerische Entwicklung und Stil

      Anfangs wurde er für seine Innenansichten anerkannt – für die er sogar 1861 auf der Nationalen Ausstellung in Florenz eine Medaille erhielt (die er als Protest gegen den Juri ablehnte) – nahm Abbati bald plein air-Malerei an, beeinflusst von seinem neuen Kreis von Künstlern. Sein Stil wurde durch eine mutige Behandlung von Licht und Schatten gekennzeichnet, wobei der Fokus auf die Erfassung lumineszierender Effekte in Landschaften lag. Er stellte oft Szenen dar, die durch Türen oder Fenster betrachtet wurden, wodurch ein Gefühl von Tiefe und Atmosphäre entstand.

Er verbrachte sein letztes Jahr damit, in der ländlichen Gegend bei Castelnuovo della Misericordia zu malen. Tragisch starb Abbati am 21. Februar 1868 in Florenz, nachdem er von seinem eigenen Hund gebissen und an Tollwut erkrankt war.
