      Frühes Leben und künstlerische Anfänge

      Isaac Lazarus Israëls wurde in eine Familie hineingeboren, die tief im niederländischen Kunstleben verwurzelt war. Er war der Sohn des renommierten Malers Jozef Israëls, der mit der Haager Schule verbunden war, und Aleida Schaap. Dieses künstlerische Erbe förderte schon früh eine Wertschätzung für das Malen in Isaac, der von jungem Alter an bemerkenswertes Talent zeigte. Zwischen 1880 und 1882 studierte er an der Königlichen Akademie der Künste in Den Haag, wo er George Hendrik Breitner kennenlernte und eine lebenslange Freundschaft schloss, die seinen künstlerischen Werdegang maßgeblich beeinflusste. Bereits im Alter von sechzehn Jahren erlangte Israëls frühe Anerkennung, als er "Übungsblasen" an den Künstler und Sammler Hendrik Willem Mesdag verkaufte, noch bevor es vollständig fertiggestellt war. Beeinflusst von der Philosophie der Tachtigers – einer Gruppe von Schriftstellern und Künstlern, die für einen Stil plädierten, der den Inhalt widerspiegelt und emotional aufgeladene Themen durch intensive Technik darstellt – verlagerte er seinen Fokus auf das Festhalten der lebendigen Szenen des täglichen Lebens in Amsterdam. Er verbrachte häufig Sommer mit seinem Vater in Scheveningen und malte farbenfrohe Küstenlandschaften. Seine Arbeit spiegelte den Wunsch wider, die belebten Straßen, Cafés und Cabarets von Amsterdam darzustellen und sich damit von der traditionelleren Thematik früherer niederländischer Meister zu entfernen.
