Seine künstlerische Entwicklung begann in einem kleinen Dorf im Bezirk Bankura, Westbengalen, wo er in einer Familie aufwuchs, die eine besondere Wertschätzung für Kunst und Traditionen teilte. Diese frühe Umgebung prägte seine künstlerische Sensibilität und beeinflusste sein gesamtes Werk nachhaltig.

      Ausbildung und frühe Jahre

      Roy erhielt seine erste künstlerische Ausbildung am Government College of Art in Kalkutta (jetzt Kolkata), wo er unter der Anleitung von Abanindranath Tagore lernte, einem bedeutenden Künstler und Pädagogen und Gründer der bengalischen Kunstschule. Diese Kunstwerke zeichneten sich durch ihre Einfachheit und ihre Verwendung von natürlichen Farben aus und spiegelten die Lebensweise und Kultur der einfachen Bevölkerung wider. Besonders beeindruckt war Roy von der Darstellung von Figuren und Szenen im Stil der bengalischen Volkskunst, insbesondere von den Gemälden der Santal-Gemeinschaft.
