      John Gilbert (July 21, 1817 – October 5, 1897), geboren in Blackheath, Surrey, war ein britischer Künstler dessen produktive Produktion seinen Ruf als „Der Scott von Malerei“ festigte, eine Ehrung, die sich auf seine außergewöhnliche Fähigkeit zurückführte, den Geist und die Pracht literarischer Klassiker einzufangen. Anders als viele Künstler seiner Zeit verfolgten Gilbert sein Handwerk durch Selbstdisziplin und sorgfältige Beobachtung – hauptsächlich indem er Drucke kopierte –, wodurch er sich als Meister der Aquarellmalerei, Ölmalkunst und vor allem Holzschnitt etablierte.
