      Geboren am 22. Februar 1855 in Port Adelaide, Südaustralien, führte Mortimer Luddington Menpes ein Leben, das von ständiger Bewegung und einer unerschöpflichen Neugier geprägt war. Als zweiter Sohn des Immobilienentwicklers James Menpes und der aus London nach Südaustralien ausgewanderten Ann bildeten seine frühen Jahre in Australien das Fundament für eine spätere, globale Existenz. In seinen frühen Zwanzigern kehrte er mit seiner Familie nach London zurück, wo im Jahr 1789 seine formale Ausbildung an der School of Art begann.

      Seine künstlerische Identität war dabei niemals eindimensional. Während ihn viele primär als Maler kennen, war er gleicher Schleier ein Autor, Grafiker, Illustrator, Radierer und Fotokolorist. Seine Vielseitigkeit ermöglichte es ihm, die Welt, der er begegnete, mit höchster Präzision zu dokumentieren; so diente er unter anderem als Kriegskünstler während des Burenkriegs in Südafrika. Seine Reisen führten ihn durch England, Japan, Indien, China, Kaschmir, Myanmar, Burma, Ägypten, Frankreich, Italien, Mexiko, Marokko und Spanien.

      Künstlerische Inspiration und der japanische Einfluss

      Die Richtung seines Schaffens veränderte sich grundlegend während einer Skizzenreise durch die Bretagne im Jahr 1880. Hier begegnete er James McNeill Whistler, der sowohl als Lehrer als auch als Mentor fungierte. Die Verbindung zwischen den beiden war so eng, dass Menpes sogar eine Wohnung mit Whistler in der Cheyne Walk in London teilte. Unter dieser wegweisenden Anleitung meisterte er die filigrane Kunst des Radierens. Whistlers Einfluss bleibt in seinem Spätwerk deutlich spürbar, insbesondere durch die kunstvolle Integration japanischer Motive und Techniken.

      Im Jahr 1887 reiste Menpes nach Japan, um dessen Kultur unmittelbar zu erleben. Diese Zeit brachte zahlreiche Werke im Stil des Japonismus hervor, die er nach London zurückbrachte und 1888 in seiner ersten Einzelausstellung in der Dowdeswell's Gallery präsentierte. Seine Faszination für das japanische Design war so tiefgreifend, dass er sein Heim in den Cadogan Gardens in einem japanischen Stil einrichtete. Insgesamt schuf er mehr als siebenhundert verschiedene Radierungen und Kaltnadelstiche, die er oft eigenhändig druckte.

      Eine feste Größe der britischen Gesellschaft

      Menpes war eine prägende Figur der Londoner Gesellschaftsszene, geschätzt als charmanter Geschichtenerzähler, der in seinem Heim regelmäßige Zusammenkünfte abhielt. Sein sozialer Kreis umfasste ein breites Spektrum an Künstlern, Schriftstellern und prominenten Persönlichkeiten. Er hielt zudem mehrere prestigeträchtige Mitgliedschaften inne, darunter die Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, die Royal Society of British Artists, das Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours sowie das Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

      In seinen späteren Jahren suchte er den Rückzug aus dem rastlosen Tempo internationaler Reisen. Nach seiner Zeit als Kriegskünstler ließ er sich in Iris Court in Pangbourne nieder. Dort leitete er die Menpes Fruit Farms, wo er vierzig große Gewächshäuser für den Anbau von Nelken sowie acht Cottages für seine Arbeiter errichtete. In Pangbourne verblieb er bis zu seinem Tod am 1. April 1938.
