Pierre Bonnard wurde am 3. Oktober 1867 in Fontenay-aux-Roses, im Département Hauts-de-Seine, geboren. Er entstammte einer wohlhabenden Familie; sein Vater war ein hoher Beamter im französischen Kriegsministerium. Bonnard zeigte früh künstlerisches Talent und besuchte zunächst das Lycée Louis-le-Grand und später das Lycée Charlemagne in Vanves.
