      Noch bevor er jemals einen Pinsel in einem Londoner Atelier führte, kannte Samuel Drummond den Rhythmus der Ostsee-Handelsrouten. Mit nur dreizehn Jahren war seine Welt bereits vom Salz und dem Holz der Schiffe definiert, da er sechs oder sieben Jahre im Seienst zu verbringen pflegte. Diese frühen Zeiten auf dem Wasser hinterließen tiefe Spuren in seinem späteren Werk, in dem die Bewegung der Wellen und die Schwere der Marinegeschichte zu zentralen Themen wurden. Nach seinem Ausscheiden aus der Marine arbeitete er kurzzeitig als Buchhalter, doch die Anziehungskraft der Royal Academy Schools im Jahr 1791 führte ihn schließlich weg von den Geschäftsbüchern und zurück zur bildenden Kunst.

      Seine Ausbildung begann mit Kreide und Öl – ein Weg, der ihn dazu brachte, über dreihundert Werke an der Royal Academy auszustellen. Viele bedeutende Persönlichkeiten ließen sich vor ihn setzen, wobei er die Präsenz von Menschen wie Walter Scott, Elizabeth Fry und Marc Isambard Brunel festhielt. Seine Arbeit für The European Magazine unter James Asperne ermöglichte es ihm, die führenden Persönlichkeiten der damaligen Zeit zu dokumentieren, darunter Sir John Soane und Friedrich Accum. In diesen Porträts erkennt man den Fokus auf die Texturen der Kleidung – die Frische eines weißen Kragens oder der schwere Fall eines Mantels – sowie den steten Blick des Dargestellten.

      Jenseits des individuellen Porträts richtete er seine Aufmerksamkeit auf das Meer. Er nutzte Öl auf Leinwand, um das Chaos und die Wucht naval-historischer Konflikte einzufangen. Seine Gemälde konzentrierten sich oft auf spezifische historische Momente, wie etwa:

Er dokumentierte den Tod von Admiral Horatio Nelson durch mehrere Werke, darunter eine Szene auf dem Deck der HMS Victory, bei der der Fokus auf der versammelten Menge und der schweren Atmosphäre jenes Augenblicks verweilt.

      Eine Familie von Künstlern

      Die Malerei war in seinem Haushalt eine gemeinsame Sprache. Drummonds Leben war durch drei Ehen geprägt, und der kreative Impuls schien direkt auf seine Kinder überzugehen. Seine Töchter, darunter Rose Emma, Ellen, Eliza Ann, Jane, Rose Hudson und Rosa Myra, wurden alle selbst Künstlerinnen. Insbesondere Rose Emma fand ihren eigenen Weg als Porträtminiaturistin, bekannt für ihre Darstellungen von Theaterdarstellerinnen.

      Trotz des beruflichen Erfolgs seiner Kinder und seines eigenen Ansehens innerhalb der Royal Academy brachten die späteren Jahre finanzielle Schwierigkeiten mit sich. Er war oft auf Unterstützung aus den Mitteln der Royal Academy angewiesen, um sein Handwerk bis zu seinem Tod in London im Jahr 1844 aufrechtzuerhalten. Sein Vermächtnis wird heute in bedeutenden Sammlungen wie der National Portrait Gallery, dem National Maritime Museum und der Walker Art Gallery bewahrt.
