Born in 1915 in the vibrant, culturally rich atmosphere of Kolkata, Rahman was a man whose life and work served as a bridge between two worlds. He possessed the rare ability to harmonize the ancient, intricate soul of Indian heritage with the stark, functionalist rigor of the Western Bauhaus movement. His journey was not merely one of professional advancement, but a profound intellectual odyssey that sought to redefine what an emerging nation could look like through the medium of steel, concrete, and light.

Rahman’s architectural language was forged in the crucible of elite international education. After earning a degree in mechanical engineering from Calcutta University, he traveled to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he became the first Indian to complete a Master's in Architecture. It was during this formative period that he encountered the giants of modernism; working in the firms of luminaries such as Walter Gropius—the very heart of the Bauhaus movement—and William Wurster, Rahman absorbed the principles of the International Style.
