Beside the retrospective paintings interpreting the history of art, Patricija Jurkšaityte has created a considerable number of completely different works, dedicated to the current issues of contemporary architecture. In the painting series Hotel Rooms and Last minute offers the artist combines motis from classical painting with įmagės take from contemporary advertising. Colourful imagės in travel agencies‘ catalogues reminded visual culture of the past. Their interiors sometimes resemble the imaginary spaces of clasical paintings. Jurkšaityte expands such interiors with some details from contemporary hotels to create an ‚al inclusive“ vision of a new reality – both impersonal and illusory.

The Labyrinth of Memory and Image
Patricija Jurkšaitytė stands as one of the most profound voices in contemporary Lithuanian conceptual painting. Born in Vilnius, Lithuania, her creative journey began to take shape during the final decade of the 20th century, emerging alongside the "breakthrough generation" that laid the essential foundations for modern Lithuanian art. Her work is not merely a collection of images but a complex, cinematic exploration of what lies beneath the surface of visibility. Through a process of elimination and reconstruction, she invites the viewer into a hermetic world where the boundaries between existence and emptiness become beautifully blurred.
Her artistic language is deeply rooted in a dialogue with the past, yet it remains vibrantly engaged with the present. Jurkšaitytė possesses a unique ability to bridge the gap between the classical and the contemporary, creating what can be described as an illusorium—a labyrinth of image and memory. Her paintings often function as puzzles, requiring the spectator to look beyond the immediate subject to find the hidden narratives tucked away in the margins of the composition.
A Neo-Romantic Reimagining of the Old Masters
While many of her contemporaries sought entirely new visual languages, Jurkšaitytė found her inspiration within the hallowed halls of art history. She draws heavily from the Renaissance, Baroque, and the works of Minor Dutch masters, yet she does so without falling into simple imitation. Unlike Western artists who might use such references for irony or rational critique, Jurkša_šaityte employs an enigmatically nostalgic lens. She adopts a Neo-Romantic approach, staging her canvases like cinematic sets complete with historical scenery and meticulously rendered costumes.
One of her most striking technical and conceptual achievements is her method of deconstructing masterpieces. In many of her early works, she famously repainted renowned compositions but intentionally left out the central figures. By removing characters such as Venus or Danaë, she shifts the viewer's focus toward the fabric of beds, the intricacy of landscapes, or the silent presence of an empty room. This technique allows her to highlight the "marginal zones" of a painting—those overlooked details that hold the potential for entirely new plots and emotional resonances.
From Renaissance Interiors to Contemporary Shadows
As her career progressed, Jurkšaitytė expanded her visual vocabulary to include the architecture of our modern era. Her evolution saw her moving from the recreation of historical settings to exploring the sterile, often impersonal spaces of contemporary life. In series such as Hotel Rooms and Last minute offers, she masterfully blends motifs from classical painting with imagery borrowed from contemporary advertising and travel catalogues. These works create an "all-inclusive" vision of a new reality, where the glossy, colorful interiors of modern hotels evoke the same sense of imaginary space found in much older traditions.
This fascination with the intersection of the old and the new even extended to the most mundane symbols of modern consumerism. In recent years, she has applied her meticulous Renaissance-style technique to the showroom interiors of IKEA, transforming a symbol of middle-class welfare into a site of profound contemplation. Through her use of oil, varnish glazes, and carefully controlled color palettes—often monochromatic with striking red highlights—she continues to challenge the viewer to find the extraordinary within the ordinary, and the eternal within the ephemeral.
